Now I Can Be Your Friend

Today Wes and I joined our friend Ryan in a venture down to Skid Row in Los Angles. We went to help with the Say Yes program put on by a local church in the area. It is an after school program for the children and mothers in the area. We got there and were warmly greeted my a room full of children so excited to see us. Within the first 2 minutes we all had a little boy or girl on our shoulders wanting to be carried around. We played with them for the first hour and then moved into a homework time. I was helping in the second and third grade class. I was sitting with a little boy who was reading a book of quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This boy read me the part from King's most famous "I have a dream" speech given in 1963.

As he read the words,
"I have a dream ... one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers."

As he finished reading this to me, he looked up at me and said, his dream came true, now I can be your friend.

I have never felt so humbled and so speechless.
